What is it?
We strongly believe that prevention is better than cure, so we offer a free spinal class for all patients. During a 45-minute informal session, we explain how to take care of your spine, giving practical advice, tips and exercises.
Classes are free and open to all in the community. The aim is to help you manage your condition and prevent it recurring. The advice will help you identify early warning signs and hopefully improve your quality of life.
Often, your condition can affect the whole family. If family or carers attend with you, they can learn how to support you in maintaining healthy habits - reminding you to do your stretches, uncross your legs, take a break from the computer, or drink more water!
Some patients are new and haven't started treatment yet; others have done several sessions. Some may have a trapped nerve or a sports injury, others whiplash from a car accident, lower back pain or neck pain.
The session begins with some gentle warm-up exercises which we recommend patients do several times a day.
Using a model spine, we then outline the importance of the nervous system, protected by the spinal column and skeleton, and explain what happens when bones move out of place, trapping or pinching a nerve. This is called "subluxation" and causes the pain which brings most patients into the clinic.
The many causes include stress, incorrect posture, bad sleeping positions, standing, working or sitting, bending, carrying or lifting incorrectly; sudden movements, accidents and falls; sneezing and coughing; gardening, flying or traveling; sports; the wrong mattress, pillow or bed; occupation & lifestyle; medical conditions such as gallstones, kidney stones, osteoarthritis or osteoporosis; disc problems, wear and tear, pregnancy and obesity.
At the end we give out information sheets and some back & neck exercises to do at home.
